Birds of Sweden

Golden eagles, great grey owls, crane migrations, and puffins — birdwatching in Sweden

Birds of Sweden

Sweden is one of Europe's finest birdwatching destinations. Roughly 540 species have been recorded in the country, with about 280 breeding regularly. The range of habitats — from Arctic tundra and boreal forest to coastal wetlands and temperate farmland — supports a corresponding diversity of birdlife, from the golden eagle soaring over Lapland's mountains to the white-tailed eagle hunting over the Baltic archipelagos.

Raptors

Golden Eagle (Kungsörn (Golden Eagle))

White-tailed Eagle (Havsörn (White-tailed Eagle))

Other Raptors

  • Gyrfalcon (Jaktfalk (Gyrfalcon)) — The world's largest falcon; rare breeder in Sweden's far north mountains
  • Peregrine falcon (Pilgrimsfalk (Peregrine Falcon)) — Recovering after DDT-era decline; nests on cliffs and increasingly on tall buildings in cities
  • Rough-legged buzzard (Fjällvråk (Rough-legged Buzzard)) — Common in mountain birch zone; lemming-dependent
  • Osprey (Fiskgjuse (Osprey)) — ~3,500 pairs; fish-eating; nests atop tall trees near lakes and rivers throughout Sweden

Owls

Great Grey Owl (Lappuggla (Great Grey Owl))

Other Owls

  • Eagle owl (Berguv (Eagle Owl)) — Europe's largest owl; rare breeder on cliffs and rocky outcrops
  • Ural owl (Slaguggla (Ural Owl)) — Forest owl; aggressive nest defender
  • Hawk owl (Hökuggla (Hawk Owl)) — Diurnal; sits atop spruce tips scanning for voles; characteristic of Norrland forest openings
  • Tengmalm's owl (Pärluggla (Tengmalm's Owl)) — Small, nocturnal; nests in woodpecker holes
  • Pygmy owl (Sparvuggla (Pygmy Owl)) — Europe's smallest owl; tiny but fierce predator

The Crane Migration

Common Crane (Trana (Crane))

A smaller but equally atmospheric migration staging occurs at Kvismaren in Närke and at Tåkern in Östergötland.

Grouse and Ptarmigan

  • Capercaillie (Tjäder (Capercaillie)) — Europe's largest grouse; males weigh up to 6 kg; dramatic spring courtship display (tjäderspel (capercaillie lek)) in old-growth forest
  • Black grouse (Orre (Black Grouse)) — Males gather at communal leks on open ground at dawn, displaying and sparring
  • Willow ptarmigan (Dalripa (Willow Ptarmigan)) — Mountain species; white in winter, brown in summer
  • Rock ptarmigan (Fjällripa (Rock Ptarmigan)) — Higher altitude than willow ptarmigan; true alpine specialist

Seabirds

  • Guillemot (Sillgrissla (Common Guillemot)) — Breeds on cliffs at Stora Karlsö off Gotland (Sweden's largest seabird colony; ~40,000 pairs)
  • Razorbill (Tordmule (Razorbill)) — Nests alongside guillemots at Stora Karlsö
  • Eider (Ejder (Common Eider)) — Large sea duck; breeds throughout the archipelagos; females famous for lining nests with supremely insulating eiderdown
  • Arctic tern (Silvertärna (Arctic Tern)) — Migrates from Antarctic to breed in Sweden; the longest migration of any animal
  • Puffin — Small numbers breed on the west coast islands; more common on the Norwegian side
